Practical fire safety checks for residential and workplace settings
The SFJ Awards Level 2 Award in Carrying Out Fire Safety Checks provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to undertake basic fire safety checks in residential and workplace premises (excluding single private dwellings).
This qualification supports those working within Fire & Rescue Services or similar roles to identify fire hazards, ensure appropriate safety measures are in place, and escalate concerns to specialist personnel where necessary.
Learners will develop the confidence to carry out structured checks, engage professionally with responsible persons, and contribute to reducing fire risk within the community.
Introduction to legislation, roles and responsibilities, and the purpose of fire safety checks. Learners explore common fire hazards, basic fire safety measures, and how to approach premises safely and professionally.
Developing practical skills in identifying hazards, reviewing means of escape, fire detection and protection measures, and understanding when to escalate concerns to specialist personnel.
Practical exercises and scenario-based activities where learners carry out structured fire safety checks, gather evidence, and complete assessment requirements.
This qualification is ideal for Fire & Rescue Service personnel or individuals in roles that involve carrying out basic fire safety checks within residential or workplace premises.
There are no formal entry requirements. However, learners should be working in a role that allows them to demonstrate their ability to carry out fire safety checks and must be at least 18 years old.
Yes. This is an SFJ Awards regulated qualification aligned to National Occupational Standards for fire safety roles.
Assessment includes a knowledge assessment, practical observation, and completion of a portfolio of evidence demonstrating competence.
Learners may progress to higher-level fire safety qualifications, such as the SFJ Awards Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety.
