On-the-Job vs Off-the-Job Training

Understanding how apprenticeship learning is delivered in the workplace and through structured training.

On-the-Job

Learning that takes place in the workplace, where apprentices apply skills in real, practical situations as part of their day-to-day role.

  • Carrying out normal job responsibilities
  • Gaining hands-on experience in a real work environment
  • Working alongside colleagues, supervisors or mentors
  • Applying knowledge to real workplace tasks
  • Developing confidence and competence in role

👉 Builds real-world experience and job competence

Off-the-Job

Structured learning that takes place away from normal day-to-day duties, designed to develop knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for the apprenticeship.

  • Virtual workshops and classroom sessions
  • Online learning and e-learning modules
  • Completing assignments and coursework
  • Research and independent study
  • One-to-one tutorials and support sessions

👉 Apprentices must complete a minimum of 20% off-the-job training as part of their apprenticeship.

How They Work Together

On-the-job and off-the-job training are designed to complement each other, combining practical workplace experience with structured learning to ensure apprentices develop full competence in their role.
