Why consider an apprenticeship as an adult?

Perhaps you are relatively new to your career, or you may even have been in your industry for over 40 years – whether you are pretty green or an old sage, doing an apprenticeship can benefit you. Read on to explore some common myths that surround apprenticeships…
3 myths busted about apprenticeships
- Myth – apprenticeships are only for entry level jobs. Fact – apprenticeships are for anyone over the age of 16, including people who have already had years within their industry!
- Myth – apprenticeships are only for new starters. Fact – apprenticeships are for anyone who wants to earn and learn at the same time. You can start an apprenticeship at any point in your career and some apprenticeships can even include degrees up to an MSc level!
- Myth – apprentices must get paid an apprentice wage. Fact – Employer’s can pay apprentices any wage they like and it does not necessarily have to be the minimum. This is especially true where employers use the apprenticeship levy to upskill current workers. Your wage is likely to stay the same – if anything once you have completed your apprenticeship you can use this to your advantage to ask for a pay rise!
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
One of the most common questions we are asked is about the delivery method of apprenticeships, and it’s understandable why! You will complete your apprenticeship over a minimum of 12 months and your training provider may not be local to you. Are you telling me I have to go back to college once a week and sit in a classroom full of strangers? Ugh. Relax – and welcome to the new frontier of apprenticeships. Apprenticeships can now be delivered fully remotely, and apprenticeships delivered by Compass give you the choice, flexibility, and freedom to choose whether you would like to attend any sessions in person or remotely.
How often are sessions, what is my schedule going to look like?
Right, down to what you really wanted to know – depending on which apprenticeship you do, your apprenticeship can be made up of workshops, courses, and, of course, assignments set by your tutor. All of these things count towards off the job training.
- Workshops at Compass are usually scheduled once a month and last for a couple of hours in the morning. Again, these can be attended in person or remotely – your choice.
- If your apprenticeship includes any courses, such as the NEBOSH General Certificate, these will be scheduled in advance as either a block course or a day release course, and you may need to set aside a week or two to sit the course.
- You will also have progress reviews with a tutor which will take place every 8 – 10 weeks.
But what if you think your employer would be reluctant to give you that much time off work? Employers are legally required to give apprentices AT LEAST 6 hours per week dedicated to off the job training. This works out to about a day per week, and many apprentices find this very achievable. This is a great time to catch up with assignments, which you can upload via our online learning portal, and do any other self study or off the job training. Again, courses and workshops also count towards off the job training so you can use these towards your 6 hours per week too.
