Whilst any entry requirements are at the discretion of individual employers, typically an apprentice might be expected to have already achieved a relevant science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) bachelor degree or equivalent.  They should be new to or already in a senior Safety role and already have a safety related qualification equivalent to Level 5 or Level 6.  For applicants who have not yet completed a Level 5 safety qualification a foundation year may be required for eligibility onto MSc programme.

In highly regulated industries where the impact of loss is high, risk and safety management professionals work collaboratively with other disciplines. They establish the context of the problem, identify all hazards including those with the potential to cause a major accident, analyse the associated risk, evaluate the risk against acceptance criteria and propose ways of treating the risk such that it is eliminated or reduced and maintained as low as reasonably practicable. They are required to address means of monitoring and reviewing the actual risk and safety performance and communicating and consulting risk issues with all relevant stakeholders.

Whilst the emphasis on specific aspects of the risk profile and use of specific techniques may differ slightly between industries, the overriding risk management process is the same for all. Whether practitioners work in ‘systems’ sectors such as nuclear, defence, rail and aviation, for example, or in ‘process’ industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical, the risk management processes, safety management systems, and organisational and human factors are all fundamentally the same.

This program has been designed both as a relevant vocational qualification for those seeking risk and safety related employment, as well as to meet the continuing professional development needs of personnel in industry.

Modules have been designed to enable the development of the intellectual and analytical skills appropriate for health and safety professionals in the 21st century. Addressing existing and emerging challenges and reviewing contemporary management and regulatory systems designed to reduce risk, module content covers a broad curriculum providing an in depth knowledge of the concepts presented. Assessment of each module is through end of course open book exams.
