Compass Occupational Health Physician Dr. S Ahmed is a HSE Appointed Doctor for lead surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>Working with lead can put employee\u2019s health at risk, causing symptoms including headaches, stomach pains and anaemia. Other serious health effects include kidney damage, nerve and brain damage and infertility.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=&#8221;Additional Information&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.3&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>The Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002 (CLAW) place a duty on employers to prevent, or where this is not reasonably practicable, to control employee exposure to lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The occupational exposure limit for lead in air set out in the Regulations is 0.15 mg\/m3, and blood lead suspension levels for males and females are 60 and 30ug\/dl, respectively.\u00a0 For young workers (under 18) the blood lead suspension limit is 50 \u03bcg\/dl.\u00a0 However there is growing scientific evidence that employees\u2019 health is at risk, even where exposure to lead is below the levels in CLAW, for example, above levels of 40ug\/dl, the following health effects have been observed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Changes in the blood which might lead to anaemia<\/li>\n<li>Effects on the nervous system<\/li>\n<li>Effects on the kidney<\/li>\n<li>Altered functioning of the testicles which could lead to infertility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The objectives of medical surveillance are to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>make an initial assessment of the suitability of an employee to work with lead;<\/li>\n<li>evaluate the effect of lead absorbed by an employee and advise on state of health;<\/li>\n<li>monitor exposure of female employees of reproductive capacity and advise on the special need to protect any developing foetus;<\/li>\n<li>assess the suitability of an employee to continue in work where there is continuing exposure to lead;<\/li>\n<li>detect early health effects of excessive lead absorption and remove employees from exposure to prevent development of further health effects; and<\/li>\n<li>assist employers in their duty to control exposure of employees to lead.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/et_pb_tab][\/et_pb_tabs][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.7&#8243;][ameliabooking service=6][\/et_pb_code][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;FAQS TITLE&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.4&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2>FAQS<\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_accordion admin_label=&#8221;FAQS ACCORDION&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.3&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;-16px|||||&#8221;][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;What is \u2018Significant Exposure\u2019? &#8221; open=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.3&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Significant exposure means exposure in the following circumstances:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where any employee is or is liable to be exposed to a concentration of lead in the atmosphere exceeding half the occupational exposure limit for lead<\/li>\n<li>Where there is a substantial risk of any employee ingesting lead or<\/li>\n<li>If there is a risk of an employees skin coming into contact with lead alkyls, or any other substance containing lead in a form which can also be absorbed through the skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;What is included in the medical surveillance for Lead? &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.3&#8243; open=&#8221;off&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Details of the general health of the individual, their occupation history and current work is taken. A blood sample is then taken and analysed at a laboratory. The HSE Appointed Doctor then analyses the results and provides further advice on action to be taken.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;How often does the blood test need to be done? &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.3&#8243; open=&#8221;off&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>This will depend on the results of the previous test and will be advised by the HSE Appointed Doctor.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;How long will the results take? &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.3&#8243; open=&#8221;off&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The blood test results will take up to 7 days.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;What happens if the result is above occupational exposure limit for lead? &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.3&#8243; open=&#8221;off&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Your employer will be advised of the results and additional control measures will need to be implemented. The blood tests will likely be repeated following the implementation of the additional controls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;What happens if the result is at or above the suspension limit?&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.3&#8243; open=&#8221;off&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>If the result is at or above the suspension level you will need to stop your work with lead. Your employer will need to find you alternative work while additional controls are implemented.
