Q+A with Compass’ Resident Occupational Health Technician
With the news about the newly regulated qualification for occupational health technicians, find out what Compass OHT, James Davies, has to say about his role as an occupational health technician.
What do you enjoy most about being an occupational health technician?
Meeting and working with a wide variety of people. I end up meeting people from all across the country from all walks of life, which makes every appointment a different experience.
Do you think the new Level 3 Certificate for Occupational Health Technicians will be beneficial?
It will be beneficial as it will provide further clarification on all the processes for an occupational health technician. So far there isn’t a formal qualification for this, instead there’s just qualifications/courses for individual aspects of the job – having one course covering all aspects required will streamline the whole process of becoming an OHT.
Are there any challenges to being an occupational health technician?
There’s always the possibility that someone may not meet standards during a medical assessment/a potential health issue might be identified. This can present a challenge as naturally a client might be quite concerned. However, we are with the client every step of the way to ensure they get the proper advice, support and medical assessments in order to get them back to work.
What do you think businesses could improve on in terms of occupational health?
Taking the proper steps towards ensuring employee safety in the workplace. It is an employer’s duty to keep their workforce safe and occupational health is a big part of this. Whether it be through health surveillance or medical testing, occupational health shouldn’t be overlooked.
