Over the past six months, Compass occupational health services have identified 29 clients with hypertension.
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a common condition in which the long term force of the blood against the artery walls is high enough that it will eventually cause serious health problems such as heart attacks and strokes. It rarely has noticeable symptoms and many people do not realise they have it. The only way to find out if your blood pressure is high is to have it checked by a health professional, and then referred to your GP for further testing.
Over the past six months, Compass occupational health services have identified 29 clients with hypertension.
Further, six clients in the last six months have had new symptoms of diabetes type 2.
Type 2 diabetes is a common condition that causes the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood to become too high. It’s caused by problems with a chemical in the body (hormone) called insulin and is often linked to being overweight or inactive, or having a family history of type 2 diabetes. It can cause symptoms like excessive thirst, needing to pass urine a lot and tiredness. It can also increase your risk of getting serious problems with your heart, eyes, and nerves. It’s a lifelong condition that can affect your everyday life. You may need to change your diet, take medicines and have regular check-ups.
During your medical at Compass, a health professional can identify this by a brief health questionnaire and carrying out an urinalysis. If glucose is identified, a finger prick test will be completed to read the blood sugar levels and if these are out of range, you will be then referred to your GP for further testing.
