Case Study: Am I Too Old For an Apprenticeship?

Case Study

In interview with Debbie Linzell, Health & Safety Manager for London Southend Airport, Debbie speaks about the stigmas surrounding apprenticeships and the diversity of her work whilst completing a Level 7 MSc Risk and Safety Management Apprenticeship.

Why did you decide to choose an apprenticeship at this particular stage in your career?

I had wanted to study the next level qualification since 2021, however the right qualification for me had never quite fallen at the right time for me professionally. When I learnt about the apprenticeship, it seemed like an ideal opportunity for me within my current role. With the support of my line manager, I took the first steps to enrol on the Level 7 Risk and Safety Management apprenticeship.

Do you think there are any misconceptions about apprenticeships?

This is a subject I would really like to discuss more in depth, especially throughout Occupational Safety & Health. Even I found myself thinking “Am I too old for an apprenticeship?” when I started. I think when you say the word ‘apprenticeship’, generally people think of students who have just finished school or college. I know I didn’t realise there was such a range of apprenticeships until I began looking into studying one myself, and found that an apprenticeship could even enable me to complete an MSc.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Every day is different! The airport is such a diverse workplace, I don’t think any two days are the same. I conduct audits, DSE Assessments, write policies, procedures and other safety communications, as well as support colleagues to complete risk assessments and safe system of work, and much more.

What are you most proud of achieving since starting your apprenticeship?

My first assignment. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was a starting point, and with feedback from my tutor I already feel I have learnt so much. Everyone has to start somewhere and I am proud to have taken those first steps to my qualification.
